Talent : Making People Your Competitive Advantage Feature

The source of competitive advantage has shifted in many organizations from reliability to innovation and flexibility. But what does it take for an organization that innovates to then manage effectively? In this follow-up to Built to Change, Ed Lawler argues that it is a combination of the right structure and the right people. First, organizations must decide what structure they are: are you a high-involvement organization that has products and services that require a high level of coordination and cooperation among employees? Or do you have a more global competitor structure in which you are constantly bringing in new talent and technological expertise? Are you a mixture of both? Lawler outlines the unique human capital strategy for each approach, shows what it looks like in action, and provides the foundation and tools for creating competitive and innovative organizations.

Beyond HR: The New Science of Human Capital Feature

Beyond HR is the pivot point that illuminates the connection between business and HR strategy in a highly transparent, compelling, and pragmatic way. Boudreau and Ramstad make the case very effectively that talentship is indeed a decision science.

Ian Ziskin, Corporate Vice President, Chief Human Resources and Administrative Officer, Northrop Grumman Corporation

Boudreau and Ramstad present a paradigm shift and a new leadership engine for today s and tomorrow s HR and business leaders. Like Ulrich s HR champions, their sustained research and practical testing has more firmly embedded HR management within top-tier organizational leadership. This major contribution to leadership practice will tangibly improve firms competitive position. Boards should hold chief executives and HR officers accountable to understand and practice the lessons from Beyond HR.

John D. Hofmeister, President and US Country Chair, Shell Oil Company

Put away the organizational tarot cards! In Beyond HR, Boudreau and Ramstad effectively show that it is imperative for the HR profession to move from historically instinctive decision making to the analytical discipline that has existed with our functional colleagues for years. Our organizations futures and our senior leaders expectations urgently require that we all make this shift quickly.

David A. Pace, Executive Vice President, Partner Resources, Starbucks

Business leaders too often have vague or inconsistent ideas about where talent creates competitive advantage, so talent decisions provide situational rather than strategic solutions. Beyond HR creates a much-needed framework to connect strategic imperatives to talent strategy. The framework helps the entire executive committee to clarify both a must-read for all CEOs and chief HR officers.

John S. Bronson, former Executive Vice President HR, Pepsi Cola Worldwide, and Senior Vice President HR, Williams-Sonoma, Inc.

Beyond HR is more than evolutionary it is revolutionary thinking. Boudreau and Ramstad present an entirely new perspective on talent-related decisions in organizations. It is a manifesto with a road map, a decision-science framework for enhancing the quality and rigor of decisions about human capital. Embrace it now, because once your competitors do, you will have to follow if you want to compete and win with talent.

Wayne F. Cascio, PhD, US Bank Term Professor of Management, The Business School, University of Colorado-Denver and Health Sciences Center

Volatility Trading, + CD-ROM (Wiley Trading)

Volatility Trading, + CD-ROM (Wiley Trading) Review

Volatility Trading, + CD-ROM (Wiley Trading) Feature

In Volatility Trading, Sinclair offers you a quantitative model for measuring volatility in order to gain an edge in your everyday option trading endeavors. With an accessible, straightforward approach. He guides traders through the basics of option pricing, volatility measurement, hedging, money management, and trade evaluation. In addition, Sinclair explains the often-overlooked psychological aspects of trading, revealing both how behavioral psychology can create market conditions traders can take advantage of-and how it can lead them astray. Psychological biases, he asserts, are probably the drivers behind most sources of edge available to a volatility trader.

Your goal, Sinclair explains, must be clearly defined and easily expressed-if you cannot explain it in one sentence, you probably aren't completely clear about what it is. The same applies to your statistical edge. If you do not know exactly what your edge is, you shouldn't trade. He shows how, in addition to the numerical evaluation of a potential trade, you should be able to identify and evaluate the reason why implied volatility is priced where it is, that is, why an edge exists. This means it is also necessary to be on top of recent news stories, sector trends, and behavioral psychology. Finally, Sinclair underscores why trades need to be sized correctly, which means that each trade is evaluated according to its projected return and risk in the overall context of your goals.

As the author concludes, while we also need to pay attention to seemingly mundane things like having good execution software, a comfortable office, and getting enough sleep, it is knowledge that is the ultimate source of edge. So, all else being equal, the trader with the greater knowledge will be the more successful. This book, and its companion CD-ROM, will provide that knowledge. The CD-ROM includes spreadsheets designed to help you forecast volatility and evaluate trades together with simulation engines.

Manage for Profit, Not for Market Share: A Guide to Greater Profits in Highly Contested Markets

Manage for Profit, Not for Market Share: A Guide to Greater Profits in Highly Contested Markets Review

Manage for Profit, Not for Market Share: A Guide to Greater Profits in Highly Contested Markets Feature

How do companies in mature markets—where savings from cost-cutting have been exhausted and breakthrough innovations are hard to come by—achieve sustainable increases in profits? For decades, managers have been told the answer lies in pursuing high market share. But Hermann Simon, Frank F. Bilstein, and Frank Luby argue that this misguided advice has destroyed, rather than created, an additional profit potential.

In Manage for Profit, Not for Share, the authors contend that companies can extract a profit potential of 1%-3 % of revenue by pursuing a profit, rather than a market share, orientation. Based on their extensive consulting work, the authors lay out a practical, proven program for making significantly more money by reconfiguring the marketing mix to sell existing products and services in different ways. The book offers practical strategies managers can use to differentiate mature products, raise prices effectively, time promotional activities properly, better understand consumer preferences, and more.

A convincing counterargument to the reigning market share dogma, this book outlines the new mind-set and tools managers will need to bring their companies closer to peak profit performance.
